Should I start a (new) business?

Should I start a (new) business?

I met quite a few “fence sitters” at a business conference last week.

The startup world is mythical, “Free time to do whatever we want, customers waiting at the doorstep, money money money…” or so the thinking goes!

Well, wake up!

It is a slog-out world for startups. Not necessarily glossy, but great nevertheless!

To all those who’re thinking, do I have it in me?

As a fence-sitter, one has two options, either keep talking about that dream, or do something about it.

Time it right. Just jump the wall. Execute. Validate. Repeat.

Prior to that jump, here are a few questions that’ll help you evaluate your readiness-quotient:

  • Have you validated your business idea?
  • What’s your risk appetite?
  • How well do you work in ambiguity and with frequent failures? ß Very important one!
  • Can you roll-up your sleeves and get involved in all aspects of running a business?
  • Do you have a support system (emotional, monetary, etc)? <Not mandatory, but every little helps>
  • Have you built a good biz network? For co-founders, management team, advisors and initial investors…
